Basic 3D Design with OpenSCAD

40.00

July 27th, 12:00 PM

OpenSCAD is a program used to create 3D designs, but instead of taking the traditional "drawing" or "clay modeling" route to creating objects, it uses code instead! Perfect for people who might think of a designing abstractly in terms of basic geometric shapes, instead of tangibly or visually. Also great for people who want to create "parametric" designs, like a cell phone case that can be modified to fit any phone simply by changing the measurements, or a flower vase that can be resized to any width or height.

In this class you'll install OpenSCAD on your laptop, learn how to create three basic geometric shapes and add/subtract them to create a more complex shape, import other people's files into your design, and export your design in a 3D-printable format. Students who grasp the basics quickly will be encouraged to make their own basic-but-functional designs, like a cup, vase, or organizer.

No programming or 3D modeling experiences is required! If you know what a sphere and a cube are, and know the difference between a colon and semicolon, you can create 3D objects with code! Under 18 welcome.

WHAT TO BRING:

- a laptop (Linux, Mac, or Windows all ok.)

- for a more productive class, try downloading and installing OpenSCAD from www.openscad.org before class.
