LuxOmat Meetup

Hello everyone,

I didn't update this last month, my apologies! We had a great talk about design and software restrictions and some ways to tackle them at the last meetup, thank you to everyone who contributed.

This next meetup we will talk a little bit more about design but we will also be focusing on how to make projects easier for people. Richard brought up some good points about not having 10 iterations of a thing when it's acceptable even with some minor flaws.

This got me to thinking that there are probably a few ways we could make everyone's maker experience better by providing some basic "building blocks" for maker projects, similar to the box maker for the laser cutter. I'm thinking about a standard design for common components or something similar that other makers can use as parts of their projects.

I will try to do better than just bottles of water for refreshment this time around, :-)

See you there!

Weld Like A Woman

Starting up the project again after a month off....

  • At this meeting we will start look at the next sketch of our Wall of Women. We will also start a scale model. If you have any wire (like at least 16 gauge bailing wire), cardboard, glue guns and glue feel free to bring them down!

If you have collected metal you can bring it in too!!!

....It's not just a man's world. Men aren't the only ones who like to play with fire!

    Collaborative woman's sculpture and movement.

What this group stands for is like the definition of weld-- to fuse together - to unite!

Weld like a Woman is a group that reminds women that we are not limited to the pre-determined parameters of what society depicts a woman should be. We are creating a space to remind women what we are made of, what we are capable of, and that we are unstoppable when we come together.

This sculpture is in response to the 2016 election. It is meant to be a stand for woman; to inspire female empowerment.

The women in our wall are a statement against walls of exclusivity - instead it's the feminine inclusivity.

Build A Drone Meetup

  • In this introductory meetup, we'll be getting hands on and building a drone. Specifically, we'll be building an F250 FPV Quadcopter Racing Drone.

When we start the meetup, the components of a drone will be in a box. When we leave, it will (hopefully!) have taken it's first flight.

This will be a great (and free!) introduction to drones. The bird we will be building has many popular characteristics of modern drones, including an FPV (first-person-view) camera and video transmitter which will allow us to see what the drone sees as it flies. We'll also go through the chore of configuring an RC controller to connect to the drone. But most importantly, we'll be assembling the drone from scratch.

The kit we'll be assembling costs about $100 from ebay or amazon, and we plan to offer subsequent classes where each participant can build their own drone. However, in this meetup we're only building a single drone.  It's more of a "watch, learn, and discuss" event.  However, we if there are any skilled solderers who want to help, we'd be happy to oblige.

This meetup and subsequent classes will be hosted by 2 DIY drone enthusiasts: Caleb, a Chimera Board Member, and Tyler, a recent Electrical Engineering graduate from SSU.

    Come fly with us!

North Bay Make-a-Thon Presentation and Discussion

Chimera is excited to be a partner for this year's North Bay Make-A-Thon and we're hosting this meetup so you can learn about the event and what it takes to compete. If you're a maker wanting to participate in an all day make-a-thon/hack-a-thon style event with thousands of dollars in prize money and potential employers/investors, you should come down to learn more!

    More about the Make-a-Thon:

SoCo Nexus and SSU created the Make-A-Thon in 2015 to be a bridge between innovation and education. Together we created a dynamic environment where students can work side by side with professionals to make ideas into reality. It’s a showcase for education and innovation in the North Bay. Several students were cherry picked from sponsoring companies last year for jobs and internships.

Here is what CTE said about the event in a Sonoma West newspaper article:
